The only problem I see with her is that given she's been around since the mid-00s, I don't think she really has transcended her music - people don't seem to be interested in the singer that's putting out the hits. She's known solely for her music, and that'd be a compliment in most contexts (see Adele), but it's really not in this case.

the problem is that the singer behind the hits is not a 'freak-show' and has to do all kind of stupidities just to be talked about? I see NO problem there.

Exactly. Being all over the place speaks nothing of the quality or direction of the music. The versatility would speak more if it was actually memorable that Rihanna crossed into different genres, not for the sake of just trying a new sound.
