I don't watch the show and I'm not all that familiar with the family's history, but from what I gather they weren't mega-rich until she signed up for the show. They were well off, sure, but they didn't have anything like what they have now.

Her father was one of the big shot lawyers that got O.J. Simpson off. I guess when he died he left them enough money to live off. But this worldwide fascination with the Kardashians really started with that sextape with Kim and Ray J (Brandy's younger brother). Funny thing is, that did absolutely nothing for Ray J's notoriety outside a boring Flavor of Love reject.
