True. But you have to continue your impact and success. It almost feels like he's had one album with large impact and success and a few others with some. Don't you need lots of it?

People keep calling Britney a legend for doing the **** she's been doing for the past five years. He is more talented than Rihanna and you said she's on her way to becoming a legend. Justin Beiber and Chris Brown (the most successful males of the new generation) cite him as their inspiration. Nobody knows what he's gonna do next, but his last era was very successful.

I'm not denying that, though. I'm giving him props, but it's rather arguable. I don't think anyone can sit up here and argue Michael's, Prince's or Stevie's status (that's just three notable examples of what I'm talking about). Usher's status or soon-to-be status is definitely arguable to many.

He is already a legend. Just take a look at my sig. Usher dominated the last decade with Eminem.
This decade is strating very well for him too: another #1 album and #1 singles, 2 grammy, 3 billboard awards, 2 american awards, 1 TCA . His last tour grossed almost $100 000 000 and is among world best paid musicians. His protégé is successful, 22 millions of fans on facebook. He started his career in 94 and is still relevant almost 20 years later.
@KoreanDream you should really make some research about Usher...

He's had a lot of commercial success and his career has been very consistent. However, that's not enough to be considered a legend. He's talented and deserves his success and I don't doubt in the future he will definitely have that title, but for now no.

That's why I think he could be the new Prince, for example. Prince is a legend and plenty know him, but he's not known on the level of Michael.

I consider him an ICON who's stuck in a limbo between Icon and Legend status. I don't know what it is that is holding him back from taking that title, but it's something. If anyone even brings Justin into the conversation I swear to God...because he isn't there yet either and especially not before Usher.
I do think if there was any male artist from our generation that should be considered for the title it would be him. I think he needs to build a bigger BRAND for himself, meaning he needs to market himself a little better. He started by expanding his business side with signing a notable artist such as Justin Bieber, but he needs to do more.

I've done plenty of research on him. But it's been established that Success =/= Legendary Status.

But Beyonce does have those songs. "Crazy in Love" and "Single Ladies" are praised and have made many best of lists, and she is so highly-regarded to so many in the industry. I don't think Usher has that (yet). You don't need an album; that's just an example. Patti LaBelle, for example, doesn't have an album that is really "great" or praised. But "Lady Marmalade" is one song that really defines what she is as a "legend." She has a few more. Not to mention, she is distinct.

!!!
This is EXACTLY what I'm trying to stay! He's stuck between icon and legend and I don't know what will get him to the legendary status or why he's held back.

Very true. Usher doesn't have THAT song or THAT album, I suppose. Maybe that's what is holding him back?

Prince is highly-respected. 1999, Purple Rain and Sign 'O The Times are considered masterpieces and despite Prince never reaching Michael's level, he is just as respected as Michael by his peers and people after him. Just look at all these artists either covering his music or just tagging his style in their songs. Plus, Prince is easily recognizable.

That's undeniable. But you don't hear about Prince in the general public like you do MJ.

He doesn't have the worldwide mass appeal to pull that title off. if we make John Mayer a Legend than you have to make Usher one as well. John's appeal isn't as universal as it should be to garner such a title.
Ten years from now, I don't think people will still be talking about John Legend are mentioning his name as one of the more significant artists of our time that has had impact on the industry.

But I don't think he has that one song that people have praised. "Yeah!" is still remembered today, but he doesn't have a "Thriller," "Superstition," or "When Doves Cry." He surely doesn't have an album as universally praised as Thriller, Songs in a Key of Life or Purple Rain. Confessions was an enormous success, but it doesn't get brought up with the true greats, regardless of its worldwide success. I just think he hasn't gotten that one song or album that truly stands out as an artistic piece or has that "legendary" feel to it. As an individual, he really doesn't stand out either. He will be a "legend" in the sense that he has achieved so much in his career and remained consistent over the years. I will give him that much.

Confessions & 8701 are usually cited with the best R&B albums of the 2000s. So for this generation, those are his Thrillers. You're comparing him to Michael & Prince, when time is a large factor in becoming legendary. From his peers, who else did it better than Confessions in terms of having that ONE album?
