Those are poor comparisons. With Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts became the biggest female movie star in the world and the biggest since Audrey Hepburn. She was fun and bubbly but still talented (Best Actress nom) and the world became obsessed. Similar to Gaga's place in the pop world following TF. Charlize and Nicole were never that.
Also, The Hours and Monster were small, risky films whose lack of commercial success (they did well for their budgets but were hardly megahits) was made up for by awards/critical success. Is Gaga getting showered with praise for BTW?
Despite her talent, Gaga doesn't have the vision to stray too far from what made her a star. Just like Julia. So it's best to recognize that and stick to your strengths. Julia did - her first step was to change her look/image to remind people why they fell for her to begin with.

I always skip Heavy Metal Lover. I think it's boring and so is Black Jesus. My opinion though.

It was a de-glam joke.
At any rate, I would say she is more critically respected with BTW than she was with TF. The Metacritic ratings may not be that different, but that's a function of having more reviews (which include an inexplicable 0 given on principle rather than merit) plus inevitable backlash from some. More polarization, but more respect and praise from people who matter, I think.

She pretty much swept great scores from all of the most difficult and respected reviewers on Metacritic and RC.

People were hard on Gaga @ the start of TF b/c they thought she was a Britney wannabe (when in actuality if they'd just looked closer, they would have seen she DESTROYED Britney even in her prime) meets Paris Hilton. It took a while for most to see her talent. EW, who ended up kissing her ass after Paparazzi/VMAs, called her a Britney/Paris wannabe in the Summer of 2008.

The first time I checked out the Hot 100 was during Paparazzi, which is what led me to ATRL. I just enjoyed her in a way that I no longer do. Part of it was the fun of discovering her. Regardless of what she'd done with BTW, the novelty has worn off and it was never going to be as thrilling.
Ideally I would have preferred it if she had both managed to do something different from TF while still maintaining what made it special. It's not like her being "not as easily successful" this era is worth it b/c she's getting so much praise in exchange. If anything she'd getting trashed by the press. Which I felt was sort of inevitable no matter what she did (the press loves to try to bring you down when you're on top) but she really made it easy for them. A lot of the criticism (see today's MTV article) is deserved.

I get your point.
I wasn't into commercial success either until BTW to be honest. That's the moment when I joined ATRL and I don't know if that was a good thing to be honest
I'm still not that much into commercial success either. It's not my main issue, but it's still kinda a worry if you're not getting any. I don't think we're at that point - even if we can argue that her album sales have dropped since the first week, she still have managed to sell a lot more than her peers (even if you take off that Amazon thing)
But, I haven't get that "wow!" feeling (à la Bad Romance/Telephone video premiere) for a long time too and I'm feeling that a lot of her fans here feel the same way - except after listening some of my favorite songs of this album and the Judas MV maybe. I guess the new hit and different girl that she had in TF and early TFM era is now gone. Everybody know what she is able to and expect too much from her. Everything is not enough when you compare it to her greatest work. But, I don't think it's as dramatic as you make it look sometimes.
Still, there are some performances/interviews that remind me why I like her - she still manages to make me laugh and love her personality. Her album, in my opinion, is full of great music. It's not a "Teenage Dream" of "The Fame" - to me it's very different. I wasn't use to that type of music because I'm not really into 80s music. The music is what makes me still a fan. I just wish she gets her **** together with the music videos because that was such an important thing for her.
You know she has a lot of potential and talent. I know that they're a lot of flaws in this era compared to the last ones - she just need to get herself together and the good people near her.

I know what you feel Nicole and i had felt that too, sometimes i feel that GaGa has changed too much, but i just remember the 1st time a saw one of her performances, the 1st time she was singing with the piano and i just can't, i can't let her down she is my IDOL, she is talented, a genuine good human been, with a vision and ambition, this is her messy fase, she is learning and to be honest she is making mistakes, but that will make her grow as an artist, and even if she stop of been relevant and the world don't give a **** about her anymore I'm still gonna be there, and the difference between GaGa and her peers is that she gave me something to remember, I will remember her for the rest of my life! She left a legacy in us her fans and in pop culture, because at least people will remember her weird costums, or that song, or the bad romance video, and how extravagant she was, I know maybe is too soon to say all the things that i'm saying (only 3 years in the business) but that's what i think!

I really can't wait until she tours just so I can hear that song live. (HUR2L).
This is another thing that I've had on my mind, but I haven't really vocalized (mostly because it's most likely kinda dumb).
However, I'm going to say it anyway to see if y'know it kinda makes sense a little bit.
When I listen to BTW the album, I feel like she wrote songs that would sound well at her concert (See Hair/Americano acoustic performances; The Edge of Glory and Born This Way as well). I think even with the larger number of breakdowns that she has and what not, that they were designed for her concerts. (Y'know how she says things to the audience during songs, etc,.).

She better hit the 3:05 point of that song 3/4 through her show on tour.
It has the potential to murder a packed out stadium
