God, people here are so ****ing dumb. It's hopeless.
It's called marketing. Ultimately, the goal when you release an album is to sell it as much as possible, something that Britney's team has forgotten a long time ago.
However, to sell the album 99 cents wasn't the decision of her label. It's not the first time Amazon does this. It's a promotion to attract new customers to their MP3 store and in my opinion, it's also a great way to avoid piracy.
Born This Way first week sales are gonna be HUGE. Deal with it.

what kind of STAN are you! it was On sales for $3.99 along wit plenty more albums, but AMAZON was given out the free 3$ coupons as part of the black friday special. so RATED R wasn't the only album people were able to get for .99 cent .
|
Like what? She was definitely the only new release to do it and Def Jam actively promoted using the $3 discount code with the album.

Loud had a lot of promotion and a hit first single, so what's your excuse for that only opening with 200k?
|
What promotion? She only did letteman, 2 local NY radio stations and Good Morning America that whole week. and noone said Gaga wasn't gonna sell. She's Gaga after all.. but don't bring Rihanna into this and using Rated R as excuse for interscopes' little scam. Especially when the curcumstances are different.

Amazon did the 99 cent album for BTW and she sold 300k.. They did the same for Rih w/ 99 cent and we'll it didn't help that much...

Awwww, sorry you feel that way, maybe we should write up a bunch of letters and send them to Interscope. Maybe we can get them to stop trying to sell an album or two.
EDIT: This is very good for music, lets all just be happy

Nothing is wrong with the type of promo/marketing GaGa has. She is the biggest pop star at the moment; she should be getting this sort of promo, and other labels need to do the same for their pop stars too.

It's quite clear that Gaga and Rihanna are on two different levels when it comes to selling albums, so the disparity in first week sales is expected. And no it's not Interscope's scam. Interscope will continue to get those checks.

It's Amazon's choice, they wanna waste millions of dollars in very odd ways to promote their site, then alright. Gaga's album was a good one to help do that because with or without Amazon's help it would've slayed anyways. It's Amazon's way of promoting their site that just simply helps Gaga. I wanna know how Gaga feels about that, though. I've love for her to crack some skulls.

If that's true, we can call Gaga a manufactured artist now, can we? :-/

The one unconventional promotion that Gaga's record company wasn't affiliated with was Amazon MP3's amazingly low 99-cent, one-day discount on the set on May 23. Sources indicate that the stunt may have brought in more than 300,000 downloads of the album alone.

Oh, God, I can't. I just CANNOT with some people saying **** like "it's not gonna make much of a difference" about the Amazon stunt.
I JUST.

Considering it was only two weeks ago when industry folks were projecting that "Born this Way" was "only" going to sell around 500,000, having it approach 1 million (even with Amazon MP3's 99-cent stunt sales goosing the first week) is mighty impressive.

Promotion has nothing to do with being manufactured. This is all Troy's and Gaga's creative brilliance and effective business skills.

Really? Then why most people here at ATRL use that to attack people like... Let's say, Britney Spears, if that applies to every pop singer out there?
