The choruses of Sheisse, Judas, Hair, and countless other of the songs are pure, 100% ****ing pop. To say that this album thinks its above pop music is clearly delusional.

GaGa has always been cocky about her music, so there's no surprise she would use a slogan like "pop music will never be low brow". The woman hypes everything she releases like the earth is going to shatter once it reaches our ears. She is simply dramatic in that sense, but we've all come to get used to it & love it. The irony is that The Fame wasn't earth-shattering in any sense, it just had a bunch of hot singles & some great album tracks. Some weird creative bug obviously struck her in-between late 2008-2009, I can't even explain the huge difference between the TFM sound & TF sound. BTW is a creative expansion of what she started with TFM. Production-wise, vocally & lyrically, it contains her best work, & delivers quality worthy of the slogan she started preaching in 2008. She makes it clear she can still have fun but be serious as well, since clearly she wants to not only have music with variety but music with substance & meaning to her fans.

The problem with BTW stems from Gaga herself. For better or worse, Gaga is the only major popstar whose music actually comes from her and reflects who she is. Since the release of the BTW single, people have said I'm being too hard on her, or that I'm unnecessarily negative. But based on everything Gaga was saying and doing since early 2010 ( "Oh Little Monsters, it's ok that you're gay b/c God made you this way and I too was bullied but look at me now!!!!"), I knew she was gearing up to jump the shark. I didn't like who she'd become, and I sensed that her music would suffer directly as a result of that. I hoped I would end up being wrong, so I stuck around for a whole year, but I should have known better.
To be more specific, this problem with Gaga (and with BTW since, as I said, she and her music are one and the same) and the reason I can't stan for her anymore, is that the album isn't really pop. It acts like it's above pop. It's not catchy, or fun, or have huge killer hooks that make the whole world want to just dance. This is a problem for me because the first thing Gaga epicly declared when she burst onto the music scene was "POP MUSIC WILL NEVER BE LOW BROW." Did "never" mean less than 3 years? What happened to that girl? What happened to her sense of fun? Why, after such a bold declaration, is she trying to move away from pop instead of raising the bar within the pop genre? I won't even get into her now-off putting gimmicks. I said page-long essay, not book.
Gaga can act like she's totally unpredictable all she wants, but she's become anything but. I told Perez last fall that based simply on her interviews and videos, BTW was gearing up to be a self-indulgent, fun-free, preachy, bloated mess. At the time he didn't respond, but the other day he told me that he met up with her, remembered my comment, and told her that people miss her former sense of fun, charm and playfulness. He wanted to put it into her consciousness and make sure she's at least aware. So as a fan I've done my part. But I can't act like some other fanbases, and keep clinging to her simply because I'm attached to her. I can't act like those who insist "Godney" is still exciting, when she now offers nothing more than some Ke$ha-lite beats expertly engineered by her fancy team. Or that "Beysus" has an epic new single sooo much better than the demo, when it's actually another sampled mess and the most horrendous aural assault since I can't remember when. Try as I may, I can't be passionate about Lady Gaga anymore and I have to be honest instead of pretending - I was born this way after all and Gaga would want me to be true to myself and honor my e-vomit . Deep down though, I'll always have a spot for her and root for her, since I can't totally erase the last 3 years from consciousness and act like she didn't have a huge effect on me.

Gaga saying pop will never be lowbrow wasn't a promise to remake Just Dance ten times over, it meant that pop is just as legitimate an art form as any other genre of music, despite what its many detractors may say, and she's given some pretty spectacular examples of why that is with TFM/BTW. I don't think pop has to carry an "important message" or be somewhat experimental to be great, but having either of those attributes is hardly mutually exclusive to being good, enjoyable pop.

And I definitely have to disagree with the assertion that the songs are not pop. Some of the songs on the album are pure pop (Judas, the chorus of Schiesse). And I have always believed that she takes her self very seriously, but that is to no detriment to her or to the legitimacy of Born This Way as a creative expression. Of course with any form of "creative darkness" there are going to be weak spots. Problem with Born This Way is that those weak spots are not very weak at all.

Or, in simpler terms, she pushed everything that was so great about her to such disgusting extremes, it became a turn-off for me.
I used to love her crazy fashion. Now, when I see those spikes and constant, desperate attempts to keep topping herself and shock people, I want to slap her.
I used to love her closeness with and appreciation for her fans. Now, when she talks patronizingly about her fans like some cult leader, I cringe and want to slap her.
I used to love her videos. Now, their quality has decreased dramatically due to her constant, desperate (see above) attempts to keep topping herself and shock people.
I used to love her songs with their subtle empowerment messages (true fame comes from within) and subtle odes to the '80s and '90s. Now, well, I don't need to go into detail about her current music's not-so-subtle messages and odes to the past.

To be honest, I would have to say I agree to some extent about all of these except for the last one (I'll get to that in a minute). She has tried so hard to remain relevant (can yah blame her?) and to be honest you do have an extremely legitimate claim to the fact that she is becoming an extremist. Sometimes the fashion is tew much, and the videos horrible. However, that has not spoiled the music as much as it could have (and most likely would have with another individual) and that is what we are all here for.
And as to the subtlety, to be quite frank she has found that being subtle doesn't pay off. People are stupid. The general public is unable to decipher the meaning behind her songs. Look at Born This Way. Straight-up message that is not veiled behind poetry and it sold like hotcakes and is now her longest-running hot 100 number one. TBH, I think she has found that it is more effective to be straightforward.
All in all Nicole, I have to agree with you on the points about her being excessive in some areas. However, to say that that has ruined her music is quite the stretch.

We all want to slap Gaga sometimes, but it's impossible to stay mad at her when she gives us songs like ScheiBe, Goverment Hooker and Heavy Metal Lover.

This X 100000. It's starting to get a bit ridiculous. I cringe every time I hear other people say Paws up or Little Monster. I can hardly say it myself. I don't think it's healthy tbh. It really is just like a cult.

I love her excessiveness. And I think her fashion is a bit toned down this era, not much but slightly.

I think that her fashion itself is less emphasized, but the things she has done as fashion statements have been stupid. AKA the pregnant belly and the goddam shoulder and cheek bones.

It is kind of funny because I like Gaga a lot better when she is wearing just a bandana and jean jacket, none of this Halloween nonsense.
I also cringe every time she talks about her fans.
Oh, and I also hate when she talks about being bullied in high school...it is obviously a lie.
Anyways, I am gonna go back to p**** poppin to Hooker.
