"Perfectionist" - Short review by xChunk
How can you describe Natalia Kills debut the best? It's a solid mix between Pop and R&B with influences from Violater by Depeche Mode, Mezzanine by Massive Attack and Lovetune for Vacuum by Soap & Skin. Her clear voice seems innocent at first, but when you listen to the songs closely you can hear a somewhat aggressive tone. The album cover looks amazing, an artwork with many details in it and some clever people might see a deeper symbolism. Natalia described the sound of this album as dark and witty pop. Now let's see how much of a truth is behind that statement:
Perfection: An interesting Intro that leads into this fascinating debut album. The lyrics are mysterious and lead the way to the first song on the album.
Wonderland: A song about fairytales. Actually a really clever idea and it totally works. Her addicting voice and the strong melody that you can't get out of your head makes this song a great opener. (And the video makes this song even better)
Free: This is a great pop tune that re-uses some of the old "Shopaholic" lyrics. It's not a standout of the album, but it isn't a filler at all either. It's the most light and poppy track on the album.
Break You Hard: Addicting hookline, the song is very dark and cold, reminds me somehow of a track that could be on Rihanna's Rated R album, only better written and with a better voice. It flows very well with the rest of the album and I could imagine it being a future single from Perfectionist.
Zombie: The first track that we've heard from this album was this one. Like BYH, it goes in the same vein as the predecessor and all in all is a very catchy "dark pop" tune.
Love Is A Suicide: This could be an instant hit. Flawless song, extraordinary good production and Natalia's fantastic voice are making this song "perfect".
Mirrors: I have heard this song many times on the radio now and I must say that it's a clever first single choice. Should be more popular worldwide. Great lyrics, catchy melody, reminds me a little bit of Depeche Mode who got a mainstream injection and with a female singer on the lead.
Not In Love: Great melody and Natalia's voice is on point here. A really dark song and the melody and beat makes this song in my opinion.
Acid Annie: Another dark song. Reminds me totally of Alanis Morissette. Has kind of a punk vibe to it too.
Superficial: This is more of a lighter track in my opinion. A great pop song that easily gets stuck in your head.
Broke: Her voice is really great on this one, although I think it's not as memorable as the other songs.
Heaven: A sweet, dark lullaby that is sung by Natalia's innocent voice. She tries a little bit too hard though on this one and I don't feel the emotion of the song. Still a great track that I'd never skip on the album. (like with all the other tracks.)
Nothing Lasts Forever: I love this song. Billy Kravens part is fantastic too. I knew the melody already from her Love, Kills xx Series like some of the other songs, but when I heard the melody of this one, I had the scene where this song was played in my head.
If I Was God: Perfect closer of the album that leaves me wanting more. The most R&B song on the album and she kills this song vocally. Makes me really proud to be a Natalia Kills fan since the first hour. The lyrics are deep and inspirational. Along with Love Is A Suicide and Not In Love the standouts of the album.
All in all, I must say that Perfectionist is not as perfect as it tries to be and you can definitely hear that. Still, it's one hell of a debut album by a stunning new artists and I can't wait to hold her sophomore album in my hands, because with that songs, she gives me proof that she's here to stay.
