Yass. Whoopi's performance was definitely one of the/well probably the best debut performance ever. Its such a shame that she didn't get an Oscar. And Oprah gave me life with her performance too. Right from the first scene, when others have a hard time keeping up with her when she walks, I knew that she would play a tough woman.
I enjoyed the scene where Shug teaches Celie how to smile without covering her teeth and made her feel beautiful. I wish the sexuality part was more explored in the movie, as I heard in the book it is discussed in greater detail, so since it played a great role in the development of Celie's character, it should have gotten more attention (but I understand that the movie was shot in 1985 and it might have been controversial to add more sexuality there). And of course the dinner scene, where Celie finds the power to stand up to her husband and his dad is very powerful as well.
Since I don't live in the US, I wasn't very familiar with the details of gender and racial issues in the US at the beginning of the last century, so seeing this movie was not only an emotional experience for me, but it was very educational as well.
