Where’s Britney Spears when you need her?
Jul. 9 2010 - 5:28 am
Remember when Britney Spears was a complete train wreck? It was 2002, to be exact — and the pile-up lasted until 2008. For roughly six years, Spears was Lindsay Lohan. She partied too much, worked too little, and engaged in too many public displays of white-trash affectation and plain old crazy behavior. She even went through her lesbian phase: She played one on Will & Grace and French kissed Madonna at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Though her career, miraculously, never imploded (her commercial low point, 2007’s Blackout, was her best album and still sold one million copies in the U.S. and more than three million worldwide), the tabloid press’s favorite sport was taking shots at her and anticipating her imminent demise.
She gave them plenty of ammunition. Spears’s unraveling began with her alleged infidelity to Justin Timberlake, which led to their 2002 split, and an era of partying, gorging on junk food and walking around in public looking like something that the cat dragged in from the sticks of Louisiana. There was a quickie and quickly annulled marriage in Vegas (two days, seven hours long) to Jason Alexander (not that one, a childhood friend), another to Kevin Federline that wasn’t quickie enough (nearly three years), and Britney & Kevin: Chaotic.
She shaved off all her hair, went in and out and in and out of rehab, lost custody of her kids (Sean and Jayden), embarrassed herself onstage at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards by badly lip-syncing and sleep-dancing through “Gimme More,” and ended up in the psych ward after holding her two young sons hostage in her bedroom. Astonishingly, she avoided jail time, but the court’s eventual edict may have been just as bad: She was placed under the legal control of her father Jamie and a lawyer and given a strict spending limit. On the plus side, she still had money to spend.
Against all odds, dad must have done something right. Spears has since become less of a tabloid fixture, and her career rebounded nicely with her 2008 album, Circus, which was her first since her 1999 debut, …Baby One More Time, to produce a No. 1 single and more than one Top 10 hit. (For all her millions of albums sold, “Womanizer” was her first single since her debut, “…Baby One More Time,” to top Billboard’s Hot 100.)
Though Christina Aguilera was always second to Spears commercially, the general consensus was that Aguilera had longevity on her side. Look who’s laughing now. For the first time since early this century, Spears is better known as a singer than a walking — or more precisely, stumbling — disaster. (So yes, there is still hope for Lohan.) Though she hasn’t been doing much singing (or lip-syncing) lately — this month she debuted her new clothing line for Candies — she’s still a top-tier pop star, and she has the in-the-works Glee episode to prove it. Weeks, ago I posed the question “If Britney Spears were to return tomorrow with a new album, where would she fit in?” Answer: Probably somewhere between Eminem and Sade, who have had the first- and second-biggest opening weeks of 2010 so far.
She’s possibly the only female pop star who could put Lady Gaga in her place. Spears hasn’t released a new studio album since Gaga became the queen of planet pop, and her one new single, “3,” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 last fall. Gaga fans need not worry: Though Spears would give her a good friendly challenge, Gaga’s immediate commercial future is safe and secure — with or without Spears on the scene. But poor Ke$ha. She’d probably have to start packing her bags in preparation for a swift eviction from the Top 10.
And perhaps best of all, if Spears were to return tomorrow, “California Gurls,” Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg’s apparently unstoppable (even by Eminem and Rihanna on the Hot 100 this week) summer of 2010 hit, would probably, finally, be knocked off its No. 1 pedestal. If that’s not reason enough to pray for Spears’s swift return, nothing is.

I kinda agree with this one. It would have been a disaster if Britney released at the same time as GaGa, even though they are on the same level in terms of success and popularity.

Good written article, but TOO shady
They were able to see that Britney and Gaga were never direct competitors...
And he got his **** straight regarding a new album...
but her train wreck started in 2004, not 2002...

What? Disaster for Gaga... Britney would kick her ass, in the first week of sales at least (probably), overall not sure...

She really has to bring it this time! No slacking! She has to re-establish herself again as the "RISING QUEEN OF POP." We all know she will have possibly the biggest opening week for female artists in 2010, but ITS NOT ABOUT SALES! It's about making an impact and changing the music world with each album. No one really cares about sales! It's about talent! Britney will always have big sales but she's so established and is an LEGEND in her own right! But true legend's has the power to change music, not bring in SALES! I love Britney! Cant wait to 4th Quarter release!
