Which Diva is The Next Generation’s Great Gay Icon?
Almost every generation of gay men since the 1960s has claimed a fabulous diva as their “Gay Icon” to whom they look for inspiration and, let's call it "camaraderie." Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Cher, and Madonna have all been anointed such at one time (and technically still are since once an icon, always an icon). Yet somehow the newest and most liberated generation – that would be mine – has thus far gone without claiming such a star as our own.
Nothing against Madonna — she’s been a great Gay Icon in many ways — but she came on the scene thirty years ago and has already represented quite a few generations of gay men. I’m thinking it’s time for someone new.
But who should it be? Or will there be multiple icons for this latest oh so diverse generation? Or might we do without an Icon entirely due to the fact that it’s a new world and a new day and we’re doing things differently?
Personally, I’m thinking gay icons aren’t going out of style just yet. Here’s a list of possible nominees, at least as I see it. After I’ve presented these nine nominees, cast your vote and we’ll crown the next Gay Icon!

The Pros: A diva is really just a female version of a hustler (the "go getter" kind, not the prostitute!) and this girl is one hustler. Beyoncé’s fierce levels are off the charts thanks to both her great music as well as her unique style. Her “Sasha Fierce” alter ego kept her interesting and gave her the ability to show more than one side of herself. Like the best Gay Icons — I mean you Barbra! — Beyoncé ’s more than just a singer, having shown she’s got acting chops as well.
Beyoncé has also been an ally to the gay community and with her positive southern lady style and undeniable talent, she certainly appears to have what it takes to be the icon of the new generation.
The Cons: Not many cons come to mind. However, her standoffish personality and perceived lack of warmth could be a problem. Not that that hurt Madonna much.

The Pros: With her outlandish, drag queen reminiscent outfits, as well as her outspoken and outsized personality, it would be easy to name the bisexual Miss Gaga as the Gay Icon of our generation. Her sense of style and outlandish outfits not only more than meets the qualifications, but her gay activism almost seals the deal. From her speech at the Video Music Awards where she thanked “god and her gays” to her marches for equality to her recent appearance on Larry King Live, this girl is definitely on our side. And then there are those videos. Truly worthy of a Gay Icon.
The Cons: Lady Gaga may have star power, but does she have the power to stay relevant for the long haul? Is her image really going to carry her for decades to come, or will her crown be taken by someone who has the ability to change more easily with the coming trends? It’s hard not to worry that Gaga may end up like the great Cyndi Lauper: in one day, out the next.

The Pros: Christina’s ever changing style is closely reminiscent of the great Madonna. She has gone from pop princess to the sultry yet classy Ms. Aguilera in a mere decade. Plus she possesses one of the best and most powerful voices of her generation. Then there is the fact she is also a strong supporter of gay rights and like Lady Gaga also identifies as bisexual.
The Cons: One word: Xtina. Sexual expression is just fine and is partly why other generations may have chosen their icons, but is this something we want for this generation’s icon? Gay men are already often seen as hypersexual. Besides, didn’t we do this with Madonna already? On top of that, there is the fact that Miss Aguilera just doesn’t have the star power she used to. Perhaps it’s time to strike out in a different direction.

The Pros: P!nk has one of the biggest personalities of any star in the business. Her music shines a positive light on the gay community and she is openly accepting of us ‘mos. In many ways, her “in your face” feminism mirrors Madonna’s and it’s not exactly a secret that us gay boy’s love strong women. Plus, P!nk’s rock influences give her something that none of the other mostly pop icon possibilities offer and that makes P!nk a true contender for the crown of Gay Icon.
The Cons: There is something about P!nk’s overt female sexuality that might make her better suited to being a lesbian icon rather than one for gay males. Plus, her constant bad girl image may not be the one that this generation should idolize.

The Pros: Her amazingly danceable music always draws a huge gay crowd. From “Baby One More Time” to “3,” her songs have been some of the most popular on the radio, and just a few years ago, were some of the most played at gay clubs. And given her travails in the public eye, not to mention the beating she’s taken at the hands of the press, many in the gay community have felt protective of her. Indeed, many have even identified with her much like we did with the tragic Judy Garland.
The Cons: Where do we even begin? From her crazy antics including shaving her head in front of the world, pantyless public appearances, a 55 hour marriage, and her drug treatment, she isn’t exactly a role model. I mean, isn’t this the woman that married Kevin Federline? Perhaps not the best of choices.

The Pros: Miley hasn’t exactly come a long way from her Hannah Montana roots, but the girl is trying. With her new, fierce video for her single “Can’t Be Tamed,” her gay anthem “My Heart Beats for Love,” and her recent performance at G.A.Y. in London, it is apparent that she is trying to win over the gay crowd.
True, her newly sexed up image was one that people could see coming from a mile away thanks to artists like Britney and Christina having taken the same route before her. Nonetheless, she is a household name and commands more star power than many more established stars can dream of.
The Cons: The name Miley is still most immediately associated with one thing: Hannah Montana. Being a Gay Icon normally entails being fierce, bold, and sexy – not cute. While she’s trying hard – maybe too hard –Miley is likely just getting into her groove, and I suspect she needs more time to find herself and step away from her Disney past to become a true Gay Icon.

Miley Cyrus?
Most likely LG. She's apart of the LGBT community, and they were supporting her before she became successful.

Ok bitches, listen:
Right now, Madonna and Kylie are the last big Gay Icons.
Barbra Streisand, Cher, Cindy Lauper and Liza Minelli aren't relevant anymore (Well...the old 70s leather bears still worship them every day for sure)
The only person who can replace them is Lady GaGa, RIGHT NOW.
Beyoncè was never gay-related...so this is a total fail.
Britney Spears had her chance in the early 2000's but the gays were disgusted (and amused) by her mental breakdowns.
P!nk has only influence at the lesbians...and we're not here for lesbians!
Christina is only her own icon. Ha!
Miley who? Sorry, we gays are no 12 year old girls.
GaGa wins. But there is another Icon coming...I smell it. I think she'll come in a few years. There are ALWAYS more than 2 gay Icons.

I am glad Britney is not the first, it's not the best thing to be called a Gay icon. So
I didnt get why is Pink there.

Disgusted? Maybe...
but Britney wasn't as gay-supported as she was during her breakdown (and consequently, now)
I'm not surprised at Beyonce, you may say she's too ghetto or black or anything, but a lot of gays love her, here in Brazil for example, I only saw gays at her shows...
I believe, from the ones listed, lady gaga is the closer to become a real gay icon...

It really depends on the point of view...
gays are usually bitchier than any straight man would ever be...

Almost all big female artists are kind of gay icons.
Gays know whats hot and like people say:
Gays have it first, then it becomes mainstream.

Personally, I don't have many gay friends, as I feel, I can't trust most of them...

Beyonce: She's never proven that she even cares about gays. I love her but she seems like the kinda chick who'd show me a Bible if I told her I was gay.
Lady GaGa: Now she's a gay icon.
The others aren't exactly worthy of the title. Mind you, I'm a Beyonce fan, not a Lady GaGa one, so I'm being a hundred percent objective.
But there will be only two true gay icons who will always be close to my heart:
1. Janet Jackson She's done so much for the gay community, even written out against homophobia (Free Xone from The Velvet Rope). She apologized for a collaboration with Beenie Man after finding out that he was homophobic.
