Singing? Dancing? Artistry?
I absolutely adore Rihanna so please don't provoke me to drag her any further.
Rihanna has already shown incredibly artistry. ANTI simply reinforced that. Like I said, she is an excellent singer. She can dance well, but dancing=/= better performer.
It's the conformity that causes people/society to expect popstars to be A, B, C and have D, E, F attributes. Commercial success is caused by popularity. However, popularity isn't success.
Any form of attraction has the capability of making a sum of money, and these days all you need is social media and/or a YouTube account.
You don't actually need to be smart to be rich. You just need to be smarter than the person you want money from.
In this instance, there's a team of highly paid professionals who sell their artists, and their music to you by any means. An image sells more than a thousand words. Add an advertising campaign to a circulation of millions and those people will listen to it because it's mainstream radio. They're lazy, they're cheap. Who cares, but they're forced to have a small selection of music to choose from (top 40) which in turn is chosen by a group of labels, who choose artists to sign.
There's very little to care as to what talent one has, just as much as people care about what a model on a billboard really looks like without PhotoShop.

Maybe this applied in the past but we now have the internet where artists have the ability to get instant attention and gain popularity based on their abilities alone
