I kinda hope the exclusivity doesn't become a thing because it's really gonna throw the 53m people owning older models in the deep end.
Having said that I wonder if Nintendo could find a way forward with one day sticking to the same handheld system and just upgrading the CPU/GPU over time. It would ensure backwards compatibility and mean they wouldn't have to strive for innovation so much.

A while back Google was toying with a phone project where the components were interchangeable (you could switch in a better camera if you wanted, better CPU/GPU/bigger speaker, etc.). It hasn't really gone anywhere in terms of their mobile ambitions, but I think it would be really interesting for Nintendo to try something along those lines. Start with a base model, around N3DS power, for $99 (saving cost by the base model being 2D and without cameras). If you want, you can buy the extra components such as cameras, over time as new games come out and may warrant better hardware, you could purchase it when the time comes and you need it, rather than needing a whole new console.
