Bingo. Which is why instructors will also have students write smaller essays in class during exams. Instructors may or may not keep these as "baselines" to use when grading papers. Everyone has a writing style and anyone who has been through college themselves can easily identify patterns.

this reminds me of one time in grade 8…
in the state of new york (idk if u live here!) grade 8 students take an intermediate science test that is mandatory. our science teacher gave us the science exam of the previous year so we can prepare ourselves and get an idea of what our upcoming exam at the time would be like.
so when he graded the "test"s that he gave us he noticed that students who were struggling in the class (I'm talkin bout 50s and 60s and **** like that) were suddenly doing better! getting 80s and 90s! this caused for the tests to be downgraded when he added them into our class average, from actual tests to just quizzes. he suspected that there was cheating going on so he had no other option but to downgrade it for everyone.
and that really ruined my whole day because I got a 90% on that thing.
