It works because Gaga already has a history behind herself of the music she has released, the things she has done, what she used to stand for / represent & that's why we stan/love her. Not saying this is good/bad, cause that's literally the case for most big established artists. But yeah, I don't get why you guys would be surprised with fans not liking it when it's a 180 degree change for Gaga. Even during the ARTPOP era she portrayed herself as a popstar, with this era not anymore.

I think they might have meant the production. It's got a not so heavy production, but yeah the words are kinda somber like she just knows it's hard to find that one. Honestly I don't trust any of the reviewers first listens. It's too hard to capture what you heard at a listening party, Gaga standing right there in front of you, everyone dancing and laughing, pizza to eat. Too much going on to focus on every song.

The Lord her transition from country to pop was very gradual and seamless! I don't think most stans felt whiplash like Monsters are right now.

I mean, her trajectory right now is:

ARTPOP -- an overwrought EDM album
G2G -- a cute jazz standards album
Joanne -- idk how to describe it yet, but certainly none of the above

Again, I do not care at all that she's switching genres. I only care that (imo) she's doing it with sort of generic music. But I also understand disappointed Monsters who never expected a jazz album followed by a pseudo-country-pop album.
