That's why I said both Rooney and Vikander with Vikander winning. If they do that she might be able to snatch it.. we still don't know she'll obviously be good and slay because she's a phenomenal actress I think you're overreacting tho. Her movie is not even out yet once its out or screened people will start talking about it more. NO ONE was talking about Jackie at all until it was screened at those festival this past week.

Viola would win a heartbeat if she went supporting. The competition is so dead. I'm still rooting for Michelle Williams, because I love her, but most are saying her role is basically a glorified cameo (not that that hasn't stopped AMPAS before). Poor Amy though. She is screwed from winning again this time, either way.

People have been putting their chips way too blindly on Fences/Viola. Yeah she's a great actress and the material is good, but it's Denzel first time directing and the fact they skipped festival season and the lack of confidence on her at the Lead category gives the movie some red flags.

The script is great, the performers fantastic, it's not his first time directing, he already made some pretty acclaimed movies. JLaw skipped festival season last year and still was nominated. Where are them red flags?

Movies can look wonderful on paper but not work in the end. Never count a movie we don't have screening info yet so blindly as top contender, it has backfired many times before.

And in the play, Viola IS supporting. The lead is Denzel.

Or maybe her role is borderline Supporting, which it is since the original actress playing it won the Tony for Featured Actress, and they don't want a repeat of The Help for her since her character there was also borderline supporting.

Also Michelle Williams already has buzz around her but I guess that wouldn't be enough for a win against Viola Davis.

The original Broadway role won Featured (Supporting) Actress for Mary Alice. Viola arguably committed category fraud at the Tonys by campaigning for and winning Lead Actress. Of course, the fact that the role has won both lead and supporting roles just means that there's justification for her being nominated in either category at the Oscars.

But I don't think she'd be willing to go Supporting, so this whole discussion is kinda pointless.

I saw one person on goldderby explain the role by saying that an A-list actress (such as Viola) would be campaigned as Lead, but if it was some random/unknown actress playing the same role it would be campaigned as Supporting. Make of that what you will.

Supporting is gearing up actually. Michelle, even though her role is Jane Fonda in Youth type of small, is coming strong. Naomie Harris in Moonlight is really strong. Kristen Stewart in Billy Lynn and Greta Gerwig in 20th Century Women are apperently strong too. And Nicole got some praise in Lion.

It's not just about being A-list but also talent. Viola always commands attention when she's on screen even if it's just a small part, she steals the show. Even in a silly movie like Suicide Squad with all those weirdos around she was the centre of attention.
