I don't understand why Closer is so massive. I mean I knew it was going to smash before the song was out (from the first performance), it has a good production, their tones sound good, easy to sing along, great song. But there is nothing special about it

You've hit the nail on the head exactly. That was, in fact, the last time this happened to me, I just thought that was so terribly bland too and it was smashing nonetheless.

Even with 7 Years, for example, I didn't like it but at least I could understand the appeal for others. Closer, though, it just sounds like D-list album filler to me, yet people were hailing it as an 'instant classic' when it came out.

It is appealing to teens. It brings nostalgia. It is not a typical EDM song that is too noisy and of course, they are Americans.
