To be fair, Madonna isn't recognized that often either. The media has made her out to be a joke as well. She and Janet deserves more respect, but Janet is miles worse. She isn't even in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Madonna did that to herself, although she's still known and 'out there' she's seen as an old hag clinging on to the ounce of relevance she has left to the younger generation. Most kids my age have bad impression of Madonna.
So on one hand Janet lives quietly and thanks to that her music isn't very popular to the younger generation, Madonna on the other hand is adamant about being out and competing with women young enough to be her children and it's turning people off. Mariah is getting the same reputation, Whitney is dead and Celine Dion is still boring.
Pop divas have it hard in the wake of age and relevance.

lol this is too much. there was an argument WITHIN another argument about vocals, that's what this was about. you guys were trying to claim janet is a better singer than madonna when we rarely even hear her live all we hear is whispers I was saying that Madonna isnt such a bad singer and provided receipts. Yeah she sounds great in the TOAC performances, I wish more of her recorded music was like that and less filtered/corrected to hell. But as lovely and vulnerable as she sounds, she doesn't sound technically skilled. She struggles to hold her vibrato (1:00-1:15) and she's pretty pitchy (1:30-1:40).
Janet sounds very good by her standards lately too. Skip to 5 min, and make sure you watch until 6:30:
I hear well supported vibrato, effortless musicality, and good pitch. See 11:30 for further evidence.
