I think the writers literally based The Countess on Gaga. Like the adopted vampire kids were basically little monsters. I think Gaga was the one who tried to distance herself from "gaga" when she played the Countess; whereas Ryan and the writers wanted the Countess to literally be gaga.
Gaga succeeded in creating the Countess as separate from gaga though....even with the blond hair and outlandish outfits Ryan put her in...when she was on screen, i completely forgot about gaga and she was just the Countess.
Lets hope the writers follow through and let her play a character totally opposite to gaga and the Countess this season.
