Nobody who debuted in the 2000s can sell 300k first week - unless their target demographic are album buyers (30+ year olds, pre-teens, etc). Nobody who has a huge chunk of their audience from the young adult demographic can sell that much first week - it's just impossible now. Rihanna is embracing the digital era: she knows her audience VERY well, we've always known this, and it will pay off, as always.

That's just a lame excuse. The thing is, she's been nere for a decade now - slaying right and left, getting 29(?) top 10 hits and she still can't get decent 1st week sales.
Kathy Perry fits your category as well but I'm almost sure her next effort will debut with 300k+
