Because the theme Gamefreak has set for Protean is pokemon who are based off animals that can camouflage. It wouldn't work for Typhlosion and Meganium thematically. It would work for Feraligatr because alligators can camouflage.

For Typhlosion I was thinking 'Volatile' because of its unpredictable and destructive nature. It can share this ability with Camerupt, Electrode and other pokemon who have an explosive nature.

For Meganium I was thinking 'Kaleidoscopic' or 'Rainbow'.. because its colorful, varied which makes sense for a Protean equivalent. It can share this ability with other colorful pokemon
