Taylor did a standard advertising campaign that was everywhere. While that may not sound like much, like no artists do them anymore. I remember going to a Regal Cinemas theater and seeing her face on a Coke-sponsored board for a sweepstakes. She did a separate sweepstakes for the 1989 physical album where you had a chance to meet her. She also had a Target commercial. That's only scratching the surface of the advertising and marketing that 1989 had.
Beyonce's surprise release was a great marketing tactic but the only revolutionary thing it did was change the day albums are released. And no, just because a few other big names dropped surprise albums doesn't mean she revolutionized an entire landscape.
