But honestly, I don't think word of mouth is hurting it. Most people seem to like it. Those 2M forecasts were stupidity, and no one would have been stupid enough to make them if Adele hadn't done 3.3M last year, which doesn't have any bearing on everyone else in the industry. The digital-only release just further exacerbates the fact that his sales are very front-loaded and generated largely by a huge, but limited, base of album-buying fans.
