Beyonce premiering on HBO is smart for various reasons.
Commercial free & the film can be as raw and un-edited as she pleases.
Same premiere weekend as "Game of Thrones," which is undoubtedly it's most hyped premiere yet. The show finally won Best Drama at the Emmy's & last season ended with huge cliffhanger.
Beyonce has an ongoing relationship with HBO. This is her 4th exclusive premiere with them. She is obviously thinking long term.
Her target fanbase is older. Younger fans are fickle and have not grown up with her like her primary fanbase. Attracting them to HBO is not a problem as many of them have access to the channel, can get the free trial through HBO Now or free access through Direct TV.
Honestly, it is best that she premieres this on a channel like HBO. The ratings will be there, but this film isn't necessarily for that. The film has the opportunity to be nominated for an Emmy & Oscar, which would mean more.
It's really not that difficult. Don't understand the problem here.
It doesn't need to be explicit. I don't understand Beyonce. Why is she not trying to appeal to a wider audience? She is still young. It's not like she's janet jackson with a dying fanbase. She is popular enough for Fox. Like I said, HBO is not really where it is at viewers wise. Didn't the HBo concert with her husband have low ratings? If this is an event, it needs to be an event. Not everybody has HBO.

HBO has the highest rated television show on TV. She knows where the viewers go. Premiering it on a channel the same weekend as the premiere of its biggest TV series is a brilliant marketing move to bring in even MORE subscribers to their station...The point that not everybody having HBO gives people the incentive to get it...because less and less people (especially of the milennial generation) have cable television.
She chose HBO because HBO will let her air it raw, uncut and uncensored.
