NO decision we make as Americans more dramatically affects the direction of our country than our choice for president. He or she is more than the manager of the executive branch, commander in chief or appointer of judges. The president reflects, but also helps define, our national values, priorities and direction.

After considering the biggest challenges facing our nation and the future I want for my children and our country, I have decided to become the first member of the Senate to support my colleague Bernie Sanders for president.

I grew up in working-class Oregon. On a single income, my parents could buy a home, take a vacation and help pay for college. My father worked with his hands as a millwright and built a middle-class life for us.

My parents believed in education and they believed in the United States. When I was young, my father took me to the grade school and told me that if I went through those doors, and worked hard, I could do just about anything because we lived in America. My dad was right.

Years later, my family and I still live in the same working-class community I grew up in. But America has gone off track, and the outlook for the kids growing up there is a lot gloomier today than 40 years ago.

this is an absolute lie. choosing your local mayor, state senators and governer of your state is much more important than the president. their decisions affect your life directly.

Easy, the House has more to do with districts by size. In urban areas, there are more opportunities for people of color to get into office. Senate is on a state level and requires broad appeal. Unless you live in a really diverse state, the status quo of white male or woman will be prevalent. Even for white women, Senate seats are hard to come by. It's why female Senators try to stick together, even sometimes across the aisle with rival party. We have a black woman that is competitive for a seat in Senate from the state of Maryland named Donna Edwards. She's been getting national media attention as of late. It's one thing to get a person of color in Senate, but a female who is person of color? That's even more rare. She would stand to be the 2nd black female to ever be elected into the US Senate (first was Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois back in '93).

Not necessarily. The federal government plays a huge role. Maybe collectively they can effect your life directly but individually. Merkley talks about how a president can influence his whole party, all the way down to local candidates. He is right. Obama has changed the Party a lot.

i dont agree. our states can make their own laws and they choose how to spend the funds that are raised by taxes as well as given to them by the government. also local officials like school board members directly affect childrens education. i always cringe when people act like the president should be able to solve all their problems

But the president influences them.

Obvsiously, the POTUS isn't a dictator and can't control everything or fix everything. Also, you are only talking about local government collectively, i.e. a school board. A school board may have a lot of influence, but not as much as an individual school board member. I'm not saying they're useless individually, but not as powerful, influential, or impactful as the POTUS even on the local level. POTUS has broad authority when it comes to administration and implementation of federal law and policy. There are a lot of federal mandates when it comes to education. The president can decide how and if to enforce even down to the local level if he/she so chooses.

The ones with +10 are still low ballers. Most of the undecideds are apparently minorities so they'll definitely flock to her in similar fashions as other northern minorities. She'll win +15 at least (as I've always said)

Although I will say that Sanders' team has always said he wins states where he has time to introduce himself, hold rallies, spend advertisement money, do debates in, and he always said he'd win his home state.

actually he cant. my mom is a teacher and the schools and school boards have much more authority than you think. The president has much less impact on our daily lives than you think
