If you want to increase chances of your plans surviving in congress wouldn't it be logical to try and fill in as many seats as possible with Democrats? They're not going to support someone who has refused to help the party and has spoken about how the party needs to move to their ideas and talk about how corrupt and evil the party is. It's that simple. People think that's evil American politics exposing itself, but it's not. It's basic human nature. No one wants to support someone who insults them.
