A lot of people have suggested that Viola would make a better Nina. Kind of too pretty for the role IMO, but most things would be a better alternative than a blackfaced Zoe Saldana. I see it.
Zoe wanted a role that was going to put her in the Oscar realm. I don't know why these actors keep trying to get these baity roles without thinking it through.

Zoe didn't think it was a problem because she has black blood. However, someone like Michael Ealy playing Miles Davis would have garnered just as much backlash. "Colorism" is just as rampant as racism.

There's this black actress that looked exactly like Nina Simone without make-up (I forgot her name; it was brought up during the whole controversy). They could have considered her for the role. But they hate to take a gamble with an unknown actress.
