If it wasn't for Trump, Hillary would have the highest unfavorables in modern history, I believe. And that's not just amongst republicans, but democrats as well. That's likely why voter turnout started so low. Everyone was told Hillary was inevitable and decided to stay home until Sanders finally started getting mainstream attention with his close victory in Iowa and his landslide in NH, and they saw there was an alternative. A lot of Hillary's victories in some primaries were driven by early voting and many exit polls in places like SC, etc showed that most voters didn't even know who Sanders was.
Let's not even get into her honest and trustworthy ratings and the fact she's vulnerable with her email situation. That is not a strong frontrunner and she should be thanking Sanders for not attacking her harder earlier on. Like I said before, republicans are going to attack her hard this fall and take advantage of every one of her weaknesses. At this point the nominee likely isn't going to be Trump. It might not even be Cruz.
Democrats are not enthusiastic about Hillary. Even a lot of her voters like Bernie but vote for her because they feel she's more electable. If enthusiasm is down and thus turnout is low, then that just helps republicans this fall.
