MTV wasn't the huge thing y'all make it to be. It was popular for teens, but it wasn't more bigger than Hot 100.

it was the huge thing. we're discussing pop music and when it comes to mainstream pop music it's mainly the young people/teens who care about what's hot and what's not. it's the same now. and every young person stayed tuned with MTV back then. that's why tons of songs were very big/iconic to particular generations even without reaching #1 everywhere on the official charts that were relying on different things.
