Her previous lead opened with 400k. There was no reason for Focus to flop that badly Like, did people truly care about the donuts?

Also Rihanna was 26 when FFS underperformed, Katy will be 32 this year. She needs some kind of gimmick otherwise radio simply isn't gonna support her anymore.

Rihanna is facing an uphill battle as she does with every album release imo. This one was just handled even worse than anything she's put out since RR! If there's anything Katy can take from this release it's that she can only really succeed with a surprise release if it's ONLY available for purchase, à la Beyoncé.

Katy had bigger FW sales in the US than any Rihanna album with PRISM, and she goes plat relatively effortlessly. I don't think Katy has huge star power, but she is a hitmaker, so as long as she has a good song or three, she will succeed.

The chorus of Focus was polarising (for whatever reason) and while she benefited hugely from streaming, her sales suffered too.

But still, both Ari and Rih had to re-group after their lead singles underperformed and figure out how to save the era. The same thing WILL happen to Katy, we all know she/her team have lost any sense of good era planning / good single selection, so the lead will probably be some tragic mess (if EDIAH is anything to go by...), and her name won't be good enough to save her.

Sorry but no amount of stan delusion can deny that the clock is ticking and Katy's played the last 2 years of her career really poorly!

You're worrying too much, she's 32 not 40. They play Sia a lot and she's super old. They've played Gwen and Fergie in their 30s. That Rachel Platten girl is old.

At least with a surprise release, if it's bad, well, people have already spent the coins.

Focus was just not a good song. Katy can come up with a catchy bop that's a 6.5/10 and it will sell, be streamed, and be played by the radio. That's just how powerful she is.
