I feel like BMR would be the one wanting them to remain country like they did with Taylor/1989 + wanting some country tracks because it's the logical decision but then again I have no idea why they'd want to go pop

Simple. If they did it before 1989, they wanted to and BMR didn't. If it was after 1989, BMR wanted/suggested it and it just backfired leaving the band pressed, and rightfully so!
