While nothing is certain, this is a pretty safe bet. Both “Simple Song” and “Manta Ray” can be knocked out immediately, as they are two unknown, unheard songs competing against megastars and hits. Sam Smith’s James Bond theme can likely also be crossed off the list of possibilities, as the Academy just awarded its first track from the series two years ago when Adele took up the task, and she did it a lot better than Smith. “Earned It” is a great song, but “Happens” is an easy choice. It is a chance to reward Diane Warren, who has been snubbed more times than any other songwriter, Lady Gaga, who the industry respects, and to recognize the problem of sexual abuse against women in this country, which is on everybody’s mind at the moment.
