Reasons why the games can classify as Generation 6
+X & Y haven't had their "third installment" yet - this could be that (similar to B2 & W2).
+Zygarde and its new forms haven't been introduced to the games yet.
+Volcanion hasn't really been introduced to the games yet.
+Generation 6 has been around for merely 3 years, it may be too soon to move on.
Reasons why the games can classify as Generation 6.5
+Gen. 6 only brought 72 new Pokémon.
+This can be an interesting way of introducing new Pokémon to the Kalos Region.
+Possibly have new areas of Kalos to explore - the games can be "set in the future"
+Gen. 6 has been around for 3 years. Third installments usually come around 1- 2 years after the main games, so this could be an interesting way of incorporating new ideas with old.
+Megearna was recently announced in CoroCoro, she could be a new legendary Pokémon for generation 6.5.
Reasons why the games can classify as Generation 7
+Completely new game names -- You would think that a 3rd Gen. 6 installment would be called "Z" or "X2/Y2"
+About 3 years since Gen. 6 started. New generations come every 3-4 years or so, though gen. 5 to gen. 6 was about 3 years also.
+It would be something very memorable and "big" as a way to celebrate the 20th anniversary.
+They may incorporate Zygarde into this generation, too and just not make a "main game" that focuses on the new forms.
+I feel like there wouldn't necessarily be a HUGE Pokémon Direct announcement if it was something as simple as another Gen. 6 game.
+Megearna was recently announced in CoroCoro, she could be a new legendary Pokémon for the 7th generation.
I'm rooting for 7th Generation ALL THE WAY!!!!
