Unlike basically every other category, it's an element that often seems like it's done for the sole purpose of getting an Oscar. Like, it's definitely not expected that that many movies have an original song...while, say, every movie needs a director, actors, writing, costumes, a set, etc. Many of the nominees don't even play during the movie but during the end credits because they have so little to do with the movie and barely count.
The Grammy category existing should be enough.
Maybe back in the olden days it made sense when musicals were being pumped out left and right, but these days the nominees are irrelevant and/or not even tied in with the movies much.
