Yeah, anecdotal evidence isn't worth much, but I grew up in a black household and was definitely raised on that "Bill was the first black president" since the time I was a kid late in his second term. My mom was eventually swayed to leaning toward Bernie, but she was definitely all in for Hillary initially in 08 & 2015/16, and we're from a MUCH more liberal area than SC.
Even in New York City, most of my young/millennial black friends support Sanders, but far from as easily or enthusiastically as my white or even other minority friends. While there may certainly be truth to the pragmatism angle, I also think blacks in general are just a lot more cynical in terms of being represented in politics than any other ethnic group, and with good reason given both historical AND modern contexts (see the police brutality/BLM movements, and just growing discontentment with "white liberals" in general, whom we've always supported but not necessarily been supported in turn by). I also literally had to convince people he wasn't racist because of his campaign repeatedly being crashed by BLM activists early on
