the problem is that you dont actually understand what you dont agree with. The RIAA is certifying ANTI for the shipment of 1million copies. Not sales!!! This is the same if a music store had ordered 1million copies, but only managed to sell 200k of those to the public. Then the album would have sold and charted with 200k but the album would still be platinum. Samsung paid for those 1million; rihanna got paid, them being given free to the public is then out her hands and no longer concerns the RiAA

But it's not like the company bought them and are sitting on them not knowing what to do with it.

actually try to understand as to what is actually happening. Those 1million downloads werent free. Rihanna and roc nation got paid for them. Illegal downloads no money changes hands and is the same as having property being stolen.

But I feel a little funny about a company co-owned by Rihanna reporting her numbers. We need an audit on those numbers.

What I don't get is if these figures will be accepted by Billboard.
I don't think so.

I don't think any of the 1M downloads will actually count.

With a normal release:

Record label sells album to retailer - that's what the RIAA counts

Retailer SELLS the album to costumers - this is what Billboard counts.

In Rih's situation tho:

Record label sells album to retalier (Samsung) - this is what RIAA counts (the reason why it's platinum)

But the retailer didn't actually SELL the album to the costumers since it was free to them.


So if my logic is right, then Billboard won't count any of the copies downloaded, because the costumers didn't pay for it.

this is the current challenge that tidal and rihanna have with billboard i believe billboard is gonna refuse to include those extra 400k downloads unless tidal can provide proof in black and white of those sales.

I completely understand your logic because it is correct in a sense. However I could be a millionare buy a million copies of a product and give it away for free as a gift.

This is a grey area its like getting a Christmas gift you may not have wanted but its all politics.

People wanted the free copies tho since they had to put their email before downloading.

This is not like U2 being forced into our libraries. People actually wanted the album that's why they out their email.

you are very much right but the problem lies in the fact that tidal is claiming 1.4mil with the 400k being not free.

Where is Tidal saying 400k weren't free. Even if that is true, 400k would be most likely be WW, just like the 1 million downloads.
