Nicki took a hit commercially after the whole "sellout" moment a few years ago, whilst J. Cole maintaining his fanbase and gaining new fans. It has nothing to do with her being female.

Nicki is not your typical female rapper. She's pop. Anaconda, Super Bass and Starships were all massive pop hits. She promoted her last album on almost every show - pop and urban platforms - yet still hasn't reached a million worldwide.

Her album sales are unimpressive when you consider her celebrity status and the success of her singles. And also the amount of promo she does.
