I think they did the similar plot to kind of reboot Star Wars (the originals) with a new generation of characters while pleasing the old fans and the new ones. I personally like it, they did a new hope, but better. I think that the next 2 films will go a different path however, in relation to plot line. But you've gotta admit, originality aside, this was a good, fun movie (something we didn't get from the prequels)

I think those weren't cut, since it's a typical storytelling tool that one of the protagonists suffer an accident in which we believe he died but he actually survived. What happens to Phasma was definitely cut or rewritten due to lack of time, tho.

In Rey's vision of the past/future, they used voices from the 3 Obi-Wan actors of the franchise, the original, Ewan McGregor and the one who voice him in Clone Wars. I hope Rey is not a Kenobi. There are people that say that Snoke can be seen wearing Rey's clothes two times during the vision and now that would be the ultimate MESS

I don't know how someone could say they loved every other SW movie but hated VII. It was pretty much a trip down nostalgia lane for the sake of introducing an older audience to the idea of a SW trilogy that is not the prequels.
