I cried. Great movie. I would give it a B+
Why is Kylo's powers stronger than Darths? Or maybe its just more advanced special effects?

Kylo isn't stronger than the previous sith lords, he isn't even a sith. The only training he has is the one Luke gave him years ago, Snoke says a few times that his training is incomplete and that he still relays on the light side. The one thing that makes Kylo dangerous than the previous enemies is that he is emotionally unstable. Maul was a serene person that learned to challenge his rage. Dokou or whatever I won't bother explaining his character. And Anakin knew from the start what his motives were and then he was brainwashed by the Emperor. All of them used their rage as a way to increase their power, but Kylo doesn't know how to control his emotions.

The movie was literally a remake of A New Hope/ROTJ
Fantastic movie nonetheless, just wish the story itself were more original. I love the new characters.

This is my biggest gripe with it.
I think the next episodes will be much better now that they've set up
the new trinity

I’ve seen it 2 times already so it's time for an objective review:
JJ Abrams… Not one original bone in his body. Competent to make a very fun movie but absolutely incapable of great stories. SW: The Nostalgia Awakens is
a glorified remake of Episode IV: A New Hope with elements of Empire and ROTJ
. It has a fantastic female lead (I like her much better than Mark Hamill) and I love that she is simply a very interesting character and there’s no stupid pandering to her being all feminist and girl power’d. John Boyega will be a superstar if they write him something better for the next installment. I knew Oscar would steal the movie and he was just amazing along with Ridley. I have a problem with the villain because he was so terribly written yet so perfectly cast.
For a movie with so much exposition he practically got no set up except for his real name reveal and what he did when he was younger. They didn’t give him enough development and we see him as a grown-up man acting like a whiny rebel kid with anger issues. Why does he even idolize Vader when he redeemed himself in the end? Why does he hate his father? What exactly brought him to the dark side? Who are those Knights? Why should we care? The brilliant actor saves it by adding interesting emotional layers. I couldn’t stop thinking that that’s how young Anakin should have been portrayed. A big face palm was the very promoted Captain Phasma who had like 3 lines in the movie, did nothing and politely removed the security barrier as they told her but brag about that super progressive first female villain!1!! Tragically underused and sent to a trash compacter… They should have kept her solely for VIII since they did nothing to establish her in this one. A character introduced purely to boost the toy sales. I liked General Hux (?) though. The actor clearly studied dictators’ speeches. Unlike many people I don’t have big issue with Snoke’s appearance. And now let’s get to that anti-climatic death scene. Abrams tried so hard to make it dramatic but the moment they got on that bridge you knew exactly what was gonna happen and you basically felt nothing when it did. Even Carrie Fisher must have thought it was lackluster cause her acting in that scene… Like Leia didn’t seem upset at all. Actually not only in that scene. Sadly, nostalgia factor aside, she’s the weak link of this ensemble and the chemistry is gone, her dialogue with Han was a disaster. And Chewbacca walking past Leia after Han’s death? It’s like no one cares except for Rey who knew him for a few hours. Finally… how convenient that the R2 randomly woke up just when they needed it? Such a lame plot device.
As expected, the visuals were beautiful. I liked the humor. For me, by far the biggest disappointment was the music. While no one expects anything fresh from JJ Abrams, the score was one of my most anticipated things and there really was nothing memorable. I know he’s old but Legend Williams played it just as safe as the director. In the end we got great reviews for a
remake
which is really good but nothing great yet everyone is raving cuz the hype and it’s not as tragique like those embarrassing prequels (what an achievement). The prequels left such a bad taste that now we’re ready to celebrate this mediocrity. That being said the new cast exceeded all expectations. Fantastic performances elevate this otherwise safe and uninspired movie made by a committee with a checklist of things that fans disliked about the older Episodes. Applause to Disney cause the hype and the biggest marketing campaign I’ve ever seen really got EVERY demographic caught up. Can't wait to see how someone with his own vision like Rian Johnson improves on JJ’s safe garbage and takes these characters to new and original places. To me, Isaac’s Poe has that IT factor that Han had. I’d much rather see a solo Poe movie than that Han Solo spin-off with a new actor.
Grade: B
tldr:
JJ Abrams at his finest:
rehashing old plots and ideas
. As a standalone movie it relies too much on nostalgia and fan service. Weak, reductive storyline,
super convenient story development and twists, where everything is easy for the heroes and you don’t think for a moment that they may actually fail to destroy the giant death star 3.0 (is it so hard to come up with something new?)
. Brilliant cast and performances make up for that and I’m not surprised the GP likes it so much. People are so invested in this franchise that they will overlook any of the flaws to finally have the original SW back. Overall it was a great cinema experience.
