Evita was in the plans since 1991 but yes that was a great conduit to gain back respect pre Ray of light.
Erotica and bedtimes stories were commercial flops.
She even is on record saying that she should have put out the album before the sex book.
WHen she got some controversy for justify my love she allowed herself to get caught up and push further.
She got major backlash and they overshipped which goes with Janet's infamous quote they shipped it but shipped it back or whatever. Back then they'd ship 1-2M within the first month or so but then it didn't get past 2x platinum until later
erotica is still 2x platinum
Something to remember didn't reach 3x platinum until 2000 after Evita and Ray of light garnered more respect.
So then she tones it down her next era which wasn't that successful and then she puts out Something to remember so that she can gain acceptance as a singer (they were her past ballads).
She was trying to appease the fans that abandoned her.
Which is why the only things I liked were 1990 Madonna, Evita praise and ray of light.
1991-1996 seemed like she was in the least amount of control and actually letting the GP control her direction.
