I'm not sure tbh, I haven't bleached my roots in years, I always do the ends.
But I haven't heard of anyone permanently damaging the follicle with bleach, but I guess it is possible.

I recently bleached my hair too. Turned out orange the first time but idk what I was expecting since the same thing happened when I bleached it in January. I ended up just bleaching it a second time then using an ash blond dye and now I love it.

Make sure you don't wash your hair everyday, use leave-in conditioner and do coconut oil masks.
