To be fair, some songs are just classic from the day they're released and everyone knows it. "Dancing Queen", "Billie Jean" and "Bad Romance" didn't need more than two years to become classics.

Adele has been commercially influential. There was a noticeable change in popular sound before and after 21. Musically, I'd agree with you, though.

I'm personally not sold on the concept of an instant classic. It's any empty promise to sell a song, and only established artists whose songs already went on to become smashes/classics claim they already knew it was going to be a classic. Like ABBA who said they knew Dancing Queen would be a classic or how Dream said they knew Umbrella would smash. Said after the fact. You just CAN'T possibly know, and anyone in the music industry knows it, that's why I think stuff like that is ********.

Anyways the criteria for classic is a work of highest merit evaluated after a period of time so the instant classic term is a oxymoron anyways

RITD inspired me to write what is arguably the greatest song I've ever written. I would deny it if I ever released the song, though. Ain't about to give Adele the credit.

Current albums / singles being called "classic" or any variation thereof reminds me of the fact that Disney brands all of their animated films as "masterpieces" to foster a public mindset that they are, in fact, all masterpiece classics. But then, not many people would disagree. But is it because of Disney's labelling of their own products that they're perceived that way, or because they are genuinely masterpieces?

I was inspired with Portal by Lights. In the fact that it has not repeating lyrics/chorus and is rather poetic. I knew I wanted something as such
