Jessica is an amazing actress and one of the reasons why AHS got this far. Saying that I don't really see her as the Countess, maybe a toned down version of her and with a more submissive version of Matt's character, who knows.

Wow. Just wow. Where do I begin?

I loved the setting. The hotel is broody, dark, reminiscent of the Shining hotel which added the horror factor to it. I loved all the subtle nods to other horror movies (creepy voice phone call a la Scream, kidnapping and tortuting hotel guests like Hostel, the sex scene with blood seen in many vampire films/shows).

The plot was not linear. If you're too dense to be able to think critically and not be able to piece together a plot in any season of AHS, then this show is not for you. I loved how stream of consciousness his storytelling can be. It's almost like hearing a drug addict or mental patient try to narrate a story. I think it fits well with the theme of addiction and being in a state of delirium. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but my point is, AHS has never had linear, sequential plot. There has always been flashbacks and character story development where it made u think. So if you can't follow then poor you.

Omg the acting! Let's start with the least impressionable characters, Bentley and Sevigny. I think they did ok overall but wasn't really impressed. Their acting was kinda flat IMO. I hope that it's just part of building their storyline. As for Gaga. She actually did decent. I'll give her a 7/10 for her first big acting role. Her line delivery was weird at times. I think it's the accent. However she managed to have some of the most memorable lines of the episode. Her stage presence was incredible. The camera loves her. I think she does have a presence to her that recalls Joan Crawford. I'll give her a 10/10 for commanding the camera. Sarah wins the acting of the episode. I was not surprised there. I really hope she gets commended for a great role. Kathy Bates as well was up there but her character is repetitive kind of how Lange was the aging HBIC. Kathy is again the concerned mother. Denis I think brought the most comedy in his acting to this episode. I don't think this season will be deficient because of Lange's absence. I think the ensemble cast does an excellent job at filling in her void. As some of you all have said, the Countess should've been her role. That's a negative, Ryan wrote this role for Gaga. I can't see Lange trying to do the scenes Gaga did. I'm excited though to see in what form Lange will return later this season as per rumors.

As for being over the top with gore...it's called American HORROR Story for a reason. It's not something that Ryan started doing with this season. Its definitely already the bloodiest season but I don't get how people say that's it's too much. This is what this show is known for. Maybe I'm desensitized to it at this point but I don't see it as a detriment to the show.

Just my two cents. Take it as you will. Overall, I loved the episode and I'm excited to see what the rest of the season holds.

Or how they got away with showing ass rape by spiked ***** for 2 minutes... or how they got away with opening the first episode with a dead girl mounted on a guy's dick, and both of them had their eyes and tongues removed while a giant spear pierced through both of their bodies and into a wall.
