A surprise release could do wonders for her. She's going to do amazingly either way but a surprise release would make up for some of the momentum she lost by waiting so long between albums.

You may call a surprise release a gimmick, but people will only buy surprise albums from people who they believe in the artistry of and that they know will make good music. Adele has the reputation as a talented and great musician, just like Beyonce. If not moreso.

Adele is going to sell well regardless, but a surprise release can end up being frontloaded. Slow and steady with promo is the way to go, that way she'll sell the album ahead of just the first few weeks.
