He's also already got 40 million streams for the videos - probably 10-15 million US streams from the videos this week alone.

I think the popularity of an artists only gets a lot of people to check out their lead single and then if they like it they but it. So I do think the quality of the song is very important stil

I think it's important that people like the song, but looking at that list... Public reception doesn't necessarily mean quality, that's all.

Yeah well I put quality = people liking the song, because objective quality doesn't exist in music imo.

But even discounting the idea of objectivity, that doesn't quite work. The charts are largely a product of publicity and promotion. That a lot of people like a song and bought it because they heard it doesn't mean they'd necessarily prefer it to a song they haven't happened to hear.

Yeah sure. If everyone knew about every song the charts would look completely different. Being a big name is very important, because people have to know about a song to decide if they like it or not.

I was just a bit miffed about you saying the song itself doesn't matter at all, when you are big enough at the point of release. The song itself always matters too.

We probably disagree on how much we think it matters.

This version of SIO sold 544k first week. I think a "horrible" version would have sold 300k and an "amazing" version would have sold 650k, but of course there is no way to know that range for sure.

I don't know where it got its points from, but I'm sure there are lots of songs which chart low in the Hot 100 which don't get top 50 in sales, airplay or streaming. It's only #94, so it's believable imo.

I think a song could even get top 50 on the Hot 100 that way. For example, if it was #60 on sales, airplay and streaming that would probably put it top 50 on the Hot 100.

Also bear in mind a lot of songs below #50 are recurrent, so it makes it easier for new songs to debut lower down.
