A month or so ago I was playing a song from 1989 and my brother (a 23-year old dungeons-and-dragons-playing physics-PHD-student nerd who gets Rihanna and Beyoncé confused) started saying how even though he doesn't like her music, she's a good person and he respects her

Re. Lein: Eminem was/is big, especially LTWYL and The Monster to a lesser extent. Since Korean rappers and hip hop music have reached an insane level of popularity, American hip hop music is kind of a cult thing here, just like female popstars.

Re. Shaliydah: Janet isn't known; Whitney was briefly massive, obviously for The Bodyguard era; Madge is known for her '80s hits and that's it. No one knows what a Ray of Light is in real life.
