The fact that gays could not marry put them in a separate class from the rest of society, and separate is never equal. You cannot EVER have a society that treats everyone equally, but then have separate institutions for different groups.
When you exclude gays from marriage, society gives people permission to think that gays DESERVE to be excluded, so they then exclude them from other things such as jobs or housing.
Marriage is incredibly important whether or not you personally intend to marry.
like okay but they been fighting for years and they be on the news like 'its a huge win for our children' and im like wtf no i haven't been helped by this in any tangible way.
like a homophobe wont go 'oop gay marriage is legal guess i can't be a hater now'
@Dilettante I guarantee you'll think about these posts in a couple years and cringe, sorry but it's true! Your steak analogy doesn't really relate given that "civil partnership" is seen as something lower than marriage.
you know me?? omg <3 <3 <3 i'm atrlfamous
U made a comment under my "acceptance speech" in that @Prismatic thread ?

Yes you have., because it has opened the door for making job and housing discrimination illegal nationwide for gays. You could easily get a job in the future as an openly gay person that you would not have gotten before as a result of the gay marriage ruling. Kid nowadays are much less likely to grow up thinking you are garbage and treating you that was as well.
Just because the benefit is not obvious doesn't mean it is not there.
A civil union is a legal status that provides many of the same protections as marriage does to both same-sex or heterosexual couples. However, these protections are only available at the state level. Federal protections such as tax and social security benefits are unavailable to the civilly united.
