I didnt really like The Maze Runner. All the characters were very similar and I didn't like how the story unfolded.. Also the main character irritated the crap out of me.

I think he is still alive, yes. But I'm not sure if he's going to be in the next movie. He might not be coming back

Yes the books are decent, your typical Young Adult novels but I got through them. There's 4 so far.
