Think in terms of political correctness in America.
What's considered socially acceptable and safe for work language in Europe, can be warned by American standards. American society is at least 3 decades behind Europe. It's a decade ago that abolishing political correctness, regaining the freedom so say things as it is, won the elections and became mainstream in Europe. How can you solve a problem, if you don't dare to say it, to acknowledge it, recognize it,... because some people might feel offended?
