It sounds trivial on the surface, but it can really cause issues (allow me to explain).

For one reason or another- or more likely- many reasons, your favorite artist is very important to you, and their impact on your life extends far beyond just the music. They're special and unique in the sense that who they are and what they do serves to define you in some sense.

It's difficult to articulate properly, but I know from experience it's dificult to date someone who hates your fave. My ex hated Gaga and thought she was a racists, cultural appropriating, gay-using anti-feminists. No fu*king lie. And it drove me to the edge.

But there's a silver lining to the situation. Someone who is truly mature and capable of being in a relationship (and likes you of course) is not going to push the issue of insulting things/people/anything that you like or that has importance for you. They'll respectfully concede. And if they continuously disrespect your fave to your face then you might as well prepare for when they start trashing your beliefs and perspectives on larger, more important topics, not to mention your friends (trust me, it'll happen, all of it)

Basically, if they don't then stop the criticism then it's really a symptom of a larger issue which is that they are simply incapable of (or at least suck at) either empathy or accommodating your perspective (a.k.a YOU) into their life.

Let me just add that this is based on a lover who hates your fave, as opposed to simply disliking them. The latter, I imagine, shouldn't be an issue at all.

I agree. Different opinions and interests are what make relationships fun .

But that's not what I was talking about . My post was regarding people who not only "don't love" whatever it is that's important to you, but rather emphatically hate it, which they take pride in expressing to you verbally, ironically right after you just said "this person is very important to me".

That person is an asshole, and you should run. Yesterday.

I get what the OP is saying. It's not that the person you're dating hates your fave. It's more that it's an annoying attitude to be constantly shading someone you don't know or feel like you have to bring a person down.
