Just because an artist choose to make something that is not hit-appealing doesn't not mean they think they're better than others.
Maybe he made an album he liked and felt should be released, especially with all the stuff that is going on in America now. That's what an artist does. Not everyone makes the same type of music, and you saying that doesn't make you any deeper than those type of artists who do think that way.
That whole "ew! This album has no hits on it! This is so pretentious" attitude only really comes from paranoid, insecure pop stans who only really like songs that is a guaranteed top 10 single on pop radio.
